Is Anybody Listening?

When Silence Speaks

Posted on | April 19, 2016 | No Comments

Silence can sometimes speak very loudly. Most recently one news reporter in Brussels was there to report on the aftermath of the bombings there a few weeks ago.

The crowds gathered in the streets stood in silence – a very poignant silence that spoke volumes.

Sometimes it is the still small voice or the complete absence of sound – when you could ‘hear a pin drop’ – that gets peoples’ attention.

Silence can sometimes bring a senseless argument to a halt. It is the best response – but possibly the most difficult. How we admire people who have the courage – and poise – to stand in silence while verbal abuse and mockery is hurled at them…

Yet such silence speaks. And people listen.

In an increasingly hectic and chaotic world where senseless bombing cause unnecessary loss of life and families are torn apart the crowd in Brussels made their point in defiance.

It was powerful. Silence had spoken.

We heard.

Before corrupt courts there is sometimes no point in answering. When Jesus Christ appeared before the Roman governor Pilate, he was first accused by the chief priests and elders – but gave no answer. ‘The Pilate asked him “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you? ” But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge – to the great amazement of the governor.’

He too made his point – but it was not heeded. They were not listening… and that led to his death.
